About Darlington County Humane Society

More Than a Shelter. A Lifeline for Pets and People.

At Darlington County Humane Society (DCHS), we believe every animal deserves safety, compassion, and the opportunity to find a loving home.

About Us

As Darlington County's open-admission humane society, we provide care for homeless, abandoned, neglected, surrendered, and stray animals while working to strengthen the bond between pets and the people who love them. Every day, our team, volunteers, foster families, rescue partners, and supporters work together to give animals a second chance and help create a more compassionate community.

Whether we're reuniting a lost pet with its family, preparing an animal for adoption, coordinating lifesaving rescue transport, or helping pet owners access resources, every life matters.

Our Mission:

To provide compassionate care, lifesaving opportunities, and responsible placement for animals in need while promoting responsible pet ownership, reducing pet homelessness, and serving our community through education, partnerships, and outreach.

How We Make a Difference

  • A person hugging a dog with a brown and white coat and wearing an orange collar.

    Animal Care & Adoption

Every animal who enters our care receives food, shelter, medical attention, behavioral support, and individualized care while we work to find the best possible outcome. Through thoughtful matchmaking and adoption counseling, we help connect pets with families where they can thrive.

  • Person feeding a tiny kitten with a bottle, person wearing a gray and black patterned hoodie, person has a gold ring on their finger, and a pink and white name tag on their chest, with a cartoon lion image.

    Reuniting Families

Whenever possible, our first goal is reuniting lost pets with the people who love them. We work diligently to identify owners, scan for microchips, and support successful reunions before seeking new placement options.

  • Two dogs inside separate pet carriers in the back of a vehicle, with pet crates stacked on top.

    Rescue & Lifesaving Partnerships

Not every animal's journey ends at DCHS. We partner with rescue organizations throughout the region to provide additional placement opportunities, specialized medical care, breed-specific resources, and expanded lifesaving capacity.

    Community Programs

Strong communities create better outcomes for animals. Through volunteer opportunities, foster care, pet owner resources, education, and expanding access to affordable veterinary services and spay/neuter initiatives, we're working to prevent homelessness before it begins.

Our Values

  • Compassion

Every animal deserves kindness, dignity, and quality care.

  • Integrity

We are committed to honesty, transparency, and responsible stewardship of our community's trust.

  • Collaboration

We believe the greatest impact comes from working together with adopters, fosters, volunteers, rescue partners, veterinarians, donors, and our community.

  • Accountability

We strive for excellence in everything we do and continuously work to improve outcomes for the animals entrusted to our care.

  • Hope

Every animal deserves the opportunity for a brighter future, and every success story begins with hope.

Looking Ahead:

Our work extends far beyond the walls of our shelter.

As we continue to grow, DCHS is expanding community programs, strengthening lifesaving partnerships, increasing access to affordable veterinary care, and investing in innovative solutions that keep pets with the families who love them whenever possible.

Together, we're building a future where fewer animals become homeless, more families have access to the resources they need, and every pet has the opportunity to live a safe, healthy, and loved life.
